It was known that Julius, crown prince of the Emerald Kingdom, spent a good portion of his time in transit and in embassies. Rare was his return to the castle except for brief respites and meetings with his parents. Today was the latter; though tired and concerned about the strained deals with the Isle of Papillon, Julius chatted amicably with Kendrik and Amber as the trio headed for Julius' room. The dark stone paths were lit from the coming sunset, orange light playing with the emeralds, moonstones, and other assorted gems adorning the architecture. Though Julius was considered a prince in tune with the youngest generation, his home maintained its Gothic roots; its halls echoed with lonely memories.

Of course, the castle was hardly devoid of people, maids and guards alike bowing to Julius and politely bidding him welcome. An unnecessary custom but one Julius understood to be beyond his control, thus he continued to smile and thank everyone for their kind words. Kind, many scripted words.

“Perhaps we should—” Julius paused in his musing as the bustle of welcomes finally ceased and a new set of voices intruded upon the conversation. He might have continued but his ears pricked at the mention of his dear friend. Amber held a hand against Julius’ shoulder as she peered around the corner; he pressed against her gloved palm but obeyed protocol, glancing up at Kendrik instead.

The minute tension in Kendrik’s jaw would have gone unnoticed by anyone else. The twilight cast his hair in a blood-orange hue.

“New guard.” Amber grimaced, her brow snarled and contradicting her amicable nature. Certain he and the other guards walking towards them posed no threat, even decked out in the royal armour and weaponry, Amber removed her hand from her prince.

The clanking of metal footfalls ceased, their echoes replaced by raucous laughter.

“Don’t get that chick’s kink with monsters but damn if her body ain’t tight.”

A chill pierced Julius’ spine and he stiffened straight. Gone was his casual spirit and famous smile, and if not for Amber touching his hand nearest hers, they would have needed medical aid for his palms. “Julius,” she whispered, her tone sharp and insistent upon his self-awareness. He nodded, lips blanched from the pressure. The same voice struck again.

“I mean, with a name like ‘frisk,’ she’s gotta be into some weird—”

“Enough!”

A glaive of silence swung through the gathered guards, all assembling into haphazard formation as their crown prince rounded the corner with his personal attendants. Armoured bodies chittered as they bowed and bid welcome to Julius in shaken voices; their expressions paled at the unyielding anger in Julius’ expression. Amber crossed her arms and glared at them in disgust; Kendrik’s visage remained as blank as ever.

“You are all members of the royal guard.” Julius kept his arms at his sides and inclined his head at such an angle that the shadow of his bangs cast dark streaks across his glittering green eyes. Two of the five guards bowed their heads, shivering. “I demand you treat Ambassador Dreemurr with the respect a woman of her station deserves.”

A whisper of silence followed his reprimand, the guards fidgeting and fighting their fear for a proper apology. Julius’ glare did not fall on the instigator, though he knew every other guard by name and was capable of discerning to whom the voice belonged. He allowed the guard a degree of mercy given all were guilty by association. A degree the man squandered in an attempt at familiarity.

“Uhhh, no disrespect your highness, but admit it. You’d help yourself to her given the opportunity, right? You two are—”

“Be silent.”

There was no burst of volume or need for it. The man’s teeth clacked when he shut his mouth. Though one foot taller than Julius, the guard shrank back, cowed by the fury radiating from the young prince. No light flickered in Julius’ green eyes, the gemstone shade murky, tarnished. Never before had he looked more like his father than in that moment. While spared his direct glare, the other four guards also cowered where they stood.

“You forget yourself. It disgusts me to hear this blasphemy from a man wearing royal arms.” Julius’ complexion remained light, unblushed, and so his hair was fiery in the light of the castle hall. “I warn you again to speak with respect regarding Ambassador Dreemurr.” Pressing his fists against his hips concealed the trembling of his fingers as Julius prepared his final blow. This time his glare addressed each guard before pinning the main offender on the spot.

“Or I shall have you charged with lèse-majesté. Is that clear?”

The new guard stumbled back, ruining formation as he fell into a clumsy bow. Metal clamoured as he lost grip on his spear; scraping his scaled gloves against the marble floor, he barely caught the weapon. “Forgive me for my insolence,” the man pleaded, squeezing the shaft of his spear as though it would lift him to safety. It did not.

"I shall, this time." Julius declared, lowering his arms and taking his leave of the foolish guards, the line scattering out of the way. He strode down the hall, heels striking harsh echoes against the gleaming walls. Amber kept pace with him, and as they rounded the corner, her gaze crossed Kendrik's. Distance meant nothing; they understood each other without a word between them. Then she and Julius were gone.

Kendrik stepped from the spot he'd stayed throughout the confrontation. Not once did his lips part or his body move when Julius dealt with this new guard. A lucky individual; a member of the Emerald Guard would have not received such a blessing.

But now Julius was gone. He was finished with this man. Kendrik was not.

Though atremble, the guard straightened his spine again, casting glances at his coworkers for some sort of commiseration. They might have placated him in another time but now they shuffled back to their rounds, barely escaping. The man went to follow when a muscular, firm arm caught him around the shoulders, pressing down upon his clavicles. Gloved fingers gripped the ridges of his right shoulder; he winced when his metal-clad body struck the wall, shrieking echoes dying in in the abandoned hallway. Kendrik's lips flitted against his ear; the man shuddered.

Little volume did Kendrik need to send his words drilling straight into the man's skull.

"It would behoove you to consider how you speak to your crown prince. He neglected to reprimand you for your insolence towards him and forgave you for your transgression against his friend."

Kendrik paused. The man's pulse raced; he felt it in the erratic pace of his breath. A cold sweat glistened upon his skin and he gave up an audible gulp. Inhaling, Kendrik whispered,

"I have not done either. I will remember how you treated my prince this day. You'd do well to never cross me again."

His mission accomplished, Kendrik released his quarry and allowed the miserable man to sink to the floor and compose himself. The head of the Emerald Guard did not look back as he adjusted his steps to return him to Julius' side, posthaste.
Take heed not to provoke waters that are still. Its creatures know where to sleep...

Heya. So, Tekichan brought up an interesting scenario a while back of Julius have to deal with a disrespectful guard regarding Frisk; we hashed out a bit of dialogue, and since I was still in a bit of Kendrik thought-process phase, I added the last bit afterwards. Fast forward a few months, and I fluffed up the scene a little.

This isn't a major scene. It's not going to resurface in the main narrative; simply something to show how Julius is protective of Frisk even against people his parents have hired in the castle. Also to show that Julius isn't all sunshine and rainbows--there are things he will not tolerate with a political smile. And also Kendrik, pffft.

As they should be! Trashing Frisk like that, for shame!! D:
Yes. Julius is a rather affable person but don't trash-talk those he cares about, and Kendrik tends to respond in kind to his prince's feelings.

Agreed!
Oooo, so if Julius is sad, Kendrik is upset too?

Nah, Kendrik is a touch emotionally damaged. He is usually the one Julius leans on because he's like a healing rock Julius can lean on until he feels strong enough to stand back up; it's as though Kendrik absorbs the negative emotions weighing his prince down so that Julius can feel positive again. The only thing that would have Kendrik feeling remorseful is if he disappointed Julius in a big way.

I like to think of him as a samurai of sorts, living to serve his lord. He'll serve Julius until his services are no longer required, and he will never tolerate anyone treating Julius with disrespect.

Bit of a cold man. Strong leader but the type who wields an "iron fist" approach. Need some more solid info from Tekichan

I must say, I'm getting spoiled by all the beautiful writing you have been giving me to read! I did a little excited wiggle when I saw the preview of this pop up in my notifications with a mention of "Julius" in the text. He's such a great character, and you guys have done a wonderful job developing his character so far, so I'm always happy to learn more about him and his entourage.

Wow, Julius is just a genuinely good person. It is one thing to be kind in the presence of a person, but few have the strength of character to stand up for someone in their absence.  I also admire how he treated the guards with respect and restraint, despite their inexcusable actions. Although clearly Julius cares a great deal for his friend, I get the impression that he would also stand up for anyone being objectified in this way. I am also glad that St.Frisk has a friend and ally in Julius -  he will grow up to be an excellent and empathetic leader for his people; and I hope a lifelong friend to Frisk.

It's also nice to see more of the Emerald Guard here. As every diplomat does, Julius needs physical protection, but it's good to see his guards are also companions that understand him and his ideals.

Also, Kendrik is scary awesome.

Excellent work!

Hnnnnn, noooooo! You're too nice to me!
Awwww! Yay! It's so nice to read comments that celebrate Julius' presence rather than condemn it. Tekichan and I tinker with his character quite often; relieved to know you like the results.

He truly is. Julius has become so tired of the aristocratic game of lies and politics; he values honesty and loyalty more than anything else, and having a genuine, earnest friend like Frisk is more than he could ask life to give him. He will defend her in public forums for her goals and beliefs, and will not tolerate his own people talking such filth about her. You are correct that he despises this sort of mistreatment for anyone, but there was an added degree of ire in there because Frisk is so precious to him.

He calls Amber his big sister all the time. They are his family in everything but blood.

Eheheh. Kendrik doesn't tolerate any slights against Julius, and since meeting the young monster ambassador, he's become rather protective of her as well in his own way. The guard was fortunate to be under the command of the King and Queen, where his influence is more limited.

Thank you!!! <3

Oh dang! You go Julius, and Kendrik, Kendrik you scare me!
I'd have decked the guard right then and there if I had been Julius.

Beautiful writing Riku, I feel like I'm there watching the scene.

Riku and Teki, you two are just the perfect duo when it comes to stories.

Ahahaha. Kendrik is kind of like a wolf. His loyalty is to his dominant master, but threaten his prince and you will want to sleep in shifts with a friend. The only reason he doesn't do anything other than "firmly warn" is because of Julius' firm adherence to "no violence" unless necessary. He should not have technically threatened this guard without orders, but Julius' parents have given him a blanket permission to "educate" guards at his discretion.

That policy is also the reason Julius didn't strike the man either. Dude is super lucky.

Awwwww, thank you, Scarlet. <3 I owe much to Tekichan who gave me suggestions on how to detail the castle a little bit. ^_^

^//////////////^ You're too sweet!

Beautiful piece, the descriptions are lovely to read, and if I may be honest, I loved Julius in this scene. No one will disrespect Julius' friends in front of him, no matter their status or position. Protective Julius is one of the best Julius! :D

Tekichan and I wanted to reflect Julius in another light, where calm and smiles are not necessarily the appropriate response. He already has to tolerate the media and other socialites talking general smack about his best friend all the time, but this sort of locker room behaviour from guards in his home castle, not a chance. Though he's a force of positivity and equality, he's still a human male with people he cares deeply about, thus he has moments where he becomes furious and scary. The juxtaposition scares people more than anything else because so rarely does anyone see him without a smile.

So glad you liked this! Julius would blush at your comment. ^_^

When the nice, happy and overall calm character exibits signs or behaviours of anger, everyone knows that someone (sorry if my language bothers you, I tend to curse sometimes XD) f*cked up. Because if the nice character feels like the only way to end the problems is by resorting to anger or other severe tactics (reprimands, showing great disappointment, or other similar tactics), it's because something very serious has happened, and they feel like they have no other choice.

I am still glad that Julius managed to keep a cool head and a civilized approach through all that. I feel very proud for him, he'll be a great ruler in the future, I just know it!! :D

For a politician/member of royalty, image is everything. Julius is well-known for his cheerful disposition, friendliness, and determination to attain equality for everyone he meets. When the public does see him be a firm leader, they tend to be awed because he has not once been convicted of underhanded dealings or manipulation. He doesn't resort to name calling or efforts to destroy his opponents; he chooses to try and work with them instead. Thus, when the public sees him unhappy, displeased, or angry, they recognize that it must mean something dear to him.

He is a special guy for sure!

When it comes to the guards, you don't need any trained guardman for Frisk & Co.

You just need theUndertale Fandom

We'll make sure any oppositions gets crushed, their acquiantances monitored and any rebellion torn to pieces.

Any critical people will get a high five.

Ummm, not to be a stick in the mud, but there is a lot of cruelty and intolerance in the Undertale fandom. I would rather our readers treat everyone with respect and not instigate more trouble with people who leave unwelcome commentary. Tekichan has asked several times that no one engage people who are being trolls, and I agree with her position. We're trying to create a safe community, not fan the flames of intolerance and hatred.

Even if you are being dramatic, please resort to diplomatic behaviour. Julius, though angry, maintains his diplomacy. Be more like Julius.

That's what happens when it gets popular, I guess.
People of all kinds join: Some loyal, some creative, and some malicious

It's just a pity that the minority of malicious people love to stand out, which gives such a good game such a bad name.

I mean just look at fnaf: Deep hidden plots, scary gameplay and the the cancerous fandom.

I'm not saying it won't happen. Humans are sensitive creatures that feel good when their judgments are shared and feel miserable when they are challenged. Some handle it better than others. It is truly a shame where a game like Undertale, which celebrates diversity of interpretation, becomes mired in toxicity because some cannot accept alternative perspectives.

There is so much I like about FNAF but yes, I agree. The fandom can become just as toxic because of the unanswered questions. That and people becoming irate if you don't share their love of the game.
